Numisi Wine Museum

Numisi Wine Cellar-Museum, located in the picturesque village of Velistsikhe in the Kakheti region, is one of Georgia's most storied wine cellars. Established in 2010 as a private historical museum, it invites visitors to step into the rich legacy of Georgian winemaking, with its roots dating back to the 16th century. This unique cellar, built from white river stones and bricks, showcases the classical architecture of the region. The wine cellar features beautifully arched wine storage, complete with a centuries-old limestone wine press, known as a Satsnakheli, and 33 Qvevri (traditional clay wine pitchers) buried beneath the ground for wine fermentation.

With a total area of 250 square meters (2,690 square feet), the Numisi Museum houses over 5,000 artifacts, including clay, glass, copper, and wooden vessels, each offering a glimpse into Georgia’s long and vibrant winemaking history. The collection also includes exquisite women's jewelry such as necklaces and rings, alongside 18th-century brass wine vessels, old carpets, and traditional furnishings. Of particular note are the rare artifacts like the old French grape press machine by the "Marmonies" firm and vintage German wine allocator pumps.

Visitors can explore the permanent ethnographic exhibition that spans centuries of Georgian culture. Numisi Wine Cellar-Museum is not just a place for history lovers but also a destination for wine enthusiasts. The museum offers the opportunity to savor naturally aged wine straight from the Qvevri and enjoy a traditional Kakhetian lunch, with the chance to bake traditional Kakhetian bread, Shoti, and listen to live Georgian folk music.

The museum is open every day except Monday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Children under six, museum staff (both Georgian and foreign), ICOM cardholders, people with disabilities, and refugees receive free entry.

A visit to Numisi Wine Cellar-Museum is an unforgettable journey through Georgia's winemaking traditions and cultural heritage, combining history, wine, and Georgian hospitality into a truly immersive experience.
